Nottingham Law School is one of the largest full service law schools in the UK. It enjoys a national and international reputation for delivering high quality education and training across a broad range of academic and professional law programmes. Established links with legal practice make the School well attuned to the needs of both aspiring and qualified solicitors and barristers. There are over 100 full-time lecturers supporting over 2,000 undergraduate and postgraduate students. Professorships are sponsored by major Nottingham and London law firms and leading legal publishers and the School has an internationally distributed journal, The Nottingham Law Journal.
LLB Law
The LLB full-time degree provides a sound academic grounding in English Law, including elements of practical skills. As a qualifying law degree it combines core legal subjects with a range of electives, enabling the degree to be extensively tailored to the student's particular interests. Assessment is by a mixture of examinations and coursework. Students study five compulsory modules in the first and second years. In the third (or fourth if you have enrolled on the Diploma in Professional Practice) students study one compulsory module and four optional modules.
BA (Hons) Law with Criminology
This exciting new degree combines the established law and criminology courses and is a qualifying law degree. The law strand provides sound theoretical grounding in English law, and includes the teaching of practical skills, such as mooting. The criminology part addresses the foundational areas of crime and criminal justice with the opportunity to study specialist areas of choice in relation to victims, offenders and specific crime types.
LLM Competition Law
This is an exciting and increasingly important area of law, particularly internationally and EU-wide. This subject offers students the opportunity to explore the impact of competition law in areas such as monopolies and mergers and their regulation and control; cartels and price-fixing; market sharing and bid-rigging; intellectual property rights and anti-competitive practices; international competition and international trade.
LLM Corporate Law
Corporate Law focuses on corporate organisations and the law as it is related to them. The course has been designed in response to the rapid growth in the development of Corporate Law in both Britain and Europe, and to meet the needs of the legal profession in this area. Traditional subjects of corporate law are a key part of the programme, such as Insolvency Law. In addition students have the opportunity to study more contemporary subjects such as Intellectual Property and Employment Law.
LLM Health Law
This programme explores the controversial and expanding area of health law and ethics. The course is designed for a mixture of students in terms of background, including recent law graduates, practising lawyers and people working in the health care profession. Students examine general principles such as Consent to Treatment and Medical Ethics, together with more specialist areas such as the Law Relating to organ Transplants, Reproduction and the Law, Mental Health Law, Medicines and Pharmacy Law, and Employment and Health.
LLM Europe and the Law
This programme offers students the opportunity to study the law in a European context. As well as basic and specialist EU areas of law, this programme also covers Human Rights Law, UK Comparative European Law, French Law, German Law and Conflicts of Law which have application to all legal jurisdictions. Please bear in mind – you do not need to speak French or German to enrol on this LLM.
LLM Sports Law
This programme explores the growing area of Sports Law. The course will be of interest to students from a variety of backgrounds, including recent law graduates, practising lawyers and those working in sports related professions, such as sports science. This programme focuses on the Regulation of Sport at both UK and EU level and explores areas such as Sport, Law and the Human Body; Intellectual Property and Sport; Employment Issues and Sport; and Sport, Law and Society.
General LLM
The programme offers student the opportunity to study for a general Master's Degree in Law. Students will be able to select modules from the four specialised Master's courses in accordance with their interests and needs.
LLM Health Law
Employment law affects virtually all working people (much of the law in this area is relevant to the self-employed too) and is fast-changing, with political, economic and socio influences and implications. This course covers both UK and EU law and the specific contexts of sport and health working relationships.
LLM Intellectual Property Law
Intellectual Property is an increasingly important area of law, particularly internationally and EU-wide. The course offers students the opportunity to explore intellectual property law in both UK and EU contexts, together with the links to competition law and sport. This programme explores in particular Intellectual Property (Corporate), Intellectual Property and EU Competition Law, Sport and Intellectual Property Law
Research Degrees Mphil/PhD
The Nottingham Law School welcomes applications to register for Mphil and PhD degrees in Law. Although we particularly encourage applications in the fields of, criminology, criminal justice, civil justice, corporate law and health law, we do also value applications to undertake research degrees in other fields. Supervision is provided for research students by two or three members of staff, involving regular contact and periodic progress reviews.
