Human Resource Management Why study the MSc Human Resource Management? This course prepares participants for employment in human resource management and related occupational fields. The programme is one of the longest running postgraduate programmes in the Business School and remains one of the most popular. It is delivered in full-time, part-time and supported online modes of delivery. The Postgraduate Diploma has been accredited by the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD), the UK's professional body for personnel and development specialists since 1980. Aberdeen Business School is one of only a few accredited CIPD centres with CIPD authority to upgrade students to chartered member on graduation. Students who attain the Diploma become Graduate members of the CIPD. The course is highly regarded by the HR community within the Aberdeen and North of Scotland area, and has the continuing support of the North of Scotland and Islands Branch of the Institute. In co-operation with the Branch, the School has been able to attract local HR practitioners to act as mentors for students on the full-time programme during their course of study. This scheme was extended to part-time students in 2004/2005. Through the Aberdeen Business School Placement Office, we consistently find suitable placements (6 weeks) for all our full-time students. Aims of the course The aims of the taught course leading to a Postgraduate Diploma are to develop practitioners who are capable of: • Making an immediate and effective contribution to the HR function within the organisation that employs them: helping to attract, retain and develop people needed for organisational success; • Knowing why and how HR should contribute to the strategic development of the organisation that employs them, and demonstrate the potential to contribute personally to such strategic development: people who should ultimately be able to get a seat ‘at the top table’; • Understanding and influencing change within their respective organisations, and who can interpret how the wider environment impacts upon the organisation; this aim will be achieved through an analysis of business environment factors and continuing emphasis on horizontal, vertical and functional integration. • Demonstrating a commitment to continuing professional development (CPD) through showing an ability to systematically and continuously plan and review personal development; • Demonstrating competence in a wide range of generic and specific professional skills (e.g. business understanding, strategic thinking, professional and ethical behaviour, analytical and intuitive/creative thinking, communication and interpersonal skills). The aims of the course leading to a Masters Degree are to produce practitioners who are capable of the following: Continuing the development of analytical, investigative, research and communication skills by conducting a major piece of advanced independent work in an area of human resource management at the strategic level. The Human Resource Management (HRM) Group deliver modules on various aspects of human resource management, occupational behaviour and the management of change across a wide spectrum of undergraduate and postgraduate programmes. They are also engaged in academic research, commercial activities and consultancy, within the UK and much further afield, and in the supervision of students from undergraduate to doctorate level, as they undertake their research. Faculty Excellence A teaching faculty that blends academic expertise with the credibility gained from current business, professional and consultancy activities supports the School’s programmes. The staff also have an excellent record in attracting research funding from such bodies as the Arts and Humanities Research Board, Economic and Social Research Council, the European Commission and UNESCO. Staff are also on the editorial boards of numerous international journals, including the Journal of Forensic Accounting, Journal of International Trade Law and Policy, Libri: International Journal of Libraries and Information Services, and the Journal of International Business and Economics Research. Many of the School’s courses have a European and International focus and attract students from all parts of the UK, the EU and further a field. The resulting mix of students, cultures and customs creates a modern cosmopolitan study environment from which staff and students benefit. Aberdeen is located in the North East of Scotland. It is known as the Oil capital of Europe and has a large number of Oil majors based in the city. The city has one of the lowest unemployment rates in the United Kingdom.
