BA (Ed) Primary Teaching-General.
3 years full-time course leading to Qualified Teacher Status (QTS).

BSc (Ed) Primary Teaching-ICT.
3 years full-time course leading to QTS.
Typical Entry Requirements: BBC
International students Entry Requirements:
An adequate command of written and spoken English and at least one of the following:
- English Language at GCSE or O level (Grades A,B or C)
- A score of 6.5 in the IELTS test
- A pass in the NEAB University Entrance test in English (Grade 1)
- An equivalent qualification

Postgraduate Programmes
PGCE Primary.
1 year full-time course leading to QTS
Designed for those who wish to train as Primary School teachers (ages 4-11)
Is also the first year of the MAQTS programme.
PGCE Secondary.
1 year full-time course leading to QTS
Designed for those who wish to train as Secondary School teachers (ages 11-18)
Subject specialisms: Biology, Chemistry, English, Geography, Maths, Music, Modern Languages, PE, Physics, and RE.
Is also the first year of the MAQTS programme.
MA (Ed) with Qualified Teacher Status (QTS)
1 year full-time (PGCE year) plus 2 years part-time. October start. Only available to students studying for the PGCE at Durham.
MA (Ed) modular programme
1 year full-time or 2-3 years part-time. October start - modules taught over weekends to enable working students to attend.
MA Research Methods (Education)
1 year full-time. New course providing research training for those with an interest in educational research.
Taught Doctor of Education (EdD)
3 years full-time or 4-6 years part-time with research and taught elements. The EdD is taught in Singapore, Hong Kong and in the UK either through evening and weekend lectures or at summer schools.
Postgraduate Research
MA
1 year full time or 2 years part-time. Maximum thesis length 40,000 words
MEd
2 years full-time or 1 year full-time plus 1 year part-time or 3 years part-time. Maximum thesis length 60,000 words
PhD
3 years full-time or 1 year full-time plus 4 years part-time or 6 years part-time. Maximum thesis length 100,000.
For all research degrees there are three closing dates for applications:
1 August to start at Durham on 1 October
1 November to start at Durham on 1 January
1 February to start at Durham 1 April
About the School of Education
The School of Education has much to offer prospective students. We are proud to have been awarded 23 out of a possible of 24 points for the quality of our teaching by the Quality Assurance Agency and our research is recognised for its international quality with a Grade 5 rating in the 2001 Research Assessment Exercise.
The School is situated in spacious grounds overlooking the small, medieval city of Durham and in purpose-built accommodation at Queen’s Campus, Stockton. Durham itself is not far from Northumberland, the Lake District and the busy city of Newcastle.
