CTS, which follows the calendar year as the accounting period, recruited 25,000 people in 2010 too, as it expanded its verticals and focused on new geographies.
In 2010, Cognizant recruited 25k IT professionals in India. Although we haven’t finalised the recruitment figure for 2011, it will be as good as last year’s," he told reporters shortly after inaugurating its new tech park in Bantala.
Cognizant’s global manpower pool is at 1 lakh, out of which some 8,000 techies work in Kolkata. On the business scenario, Mr Chandrasekaran said: "Demand in the industry was strong in the last two quarters and hopefully it will continue in future.
Apart from traditional markets like the US and Europe, the company will also focus on emerging geographies like India, the Middle East bloc, Japan, Australia and ASEAN countries.
Cognizant started operations in Kolkata in 1996 with 16 professionals which has grown to 8,000. The tech park at Bantala is spread across 20 acres in the Bantala special economic zone. The first phase of the facility is around 650,000 square feet and has a capacity to accommodate more than 4,000 professionals, out of which around 2,000 professionals are working now.
"While it is tough to make exact estimates at present, we are looking at recruiting numbers comparable to, if not more than last year's," said R Chandrasekaran, president and managing director of CTS.
He was speaking to reporters after inaugurating the company's second campus in Kolkata. After completion, the facility will be able to house 16,000 IT professionals. At present, CTS has 8,000 employees in Kolkata. The new campus is one of the company's two major campuses. The other one is in Chennai and it can house 15,000 people.
