Maharashtra RTE Admission 2026-27: Eligibility, Selection Lists, Documents and Status
Updated: 19 October 2026. The application and selection-list deadlines mentioned here have passed. This guide helps parents review the 2026-27 process and follow up on an existing case. A fresh application requires a current official notice.
Maharashtra RTE admission 2026-27 is the state's online process for admission under the 25% quota in participating private unaided schools. For a family, receiving a selection message is an important step, but document verification and recorded admission confirmation also need attention.
This article explains the revised deadlines, eligibility checks, selection and waiting lists, and the records parents should keep when approaching a verification centre.
Maharashtra RTE 2026-27: key information
| Particular | Details |
|---|---|
| Authority | School Education and Sports Department, Gove ment of Maharashtra |
| Academic year | 2026-27 |
| Admission route | RTE 25% admission to the applicable entry class |
| Entry class | Pre-primary or Class 1, as applicable to the participating school |
| EWS income criterion | Parental annual income below ₹1 lakh, subject to the applicable instructions |
| Official website | Maharashtra RTE 25% Admission Portal |
Application deadlines and later selection rounds
The original application period ran from 17 February to 10 March 2026. Further extensions followed. A report dated 26 March recorded an extension from 25 March to 31 March 2026. Parents checking an old case should therefore distinguish an application deadline from a later admission-confirmation deadline.
| Stage | Published date or window |
|---|---|
| Original application window | 17 February to 10 March 2026 |
| March application extension reported on 26 March | 31 March 2026 |
| First-selection admission confirmation extension reported on 21 April | 30 April 2026 |
| Selection List No. 5 admission window displayed on the official portal | 16 to 31 July 2026 |
The July window applied to eligible children in that selection list. It was not a general invitation for all families to file a new application. Use the official schedule for the child's particular round.
Who can qualify?
Economically weaker sections
The published 2026 instructions identify children whose parents' annual income is below ₹1 lakh under the economically weaker-section route. Confirm the accepted income-certificate period and issuing authority from the official document list. Do not assume that any recently issued financial document will meet the requirement.
Disadvantaged groups
The instructions also identify disadvantaged-group routes, including specified social categories and children with particular circumstances, such as disability or orphanhood. Supporting evidence depends on the category claimed. An income certificate and a category certificate establish different things and should not be treated as interchangeable.
Residence and age
Provide the child's genuine Maharashtra residential details and the documents accepted for the application. For age, use the portal's GR About Entry Level/Age instructions for the selected entry class.
The RTE Act's general 6-to-14 education entitlement should not be mistaken for a blanket entry-class age range. School entry stages have their own rules. This guide does not publish a fixed birth-date table because the exact 2026-27 table could not be independently verified.
School distance: why the address matters
The distance rule changed during the 2026 process. March reporting recorded restoration of the earlier 3 km framework after the proposed 1 km restriction. Priority was reported for applicants within 1 km, followed by those within 1-3 km, with further consideration subject to applicable rules and remaining seats.
Check the revised instructions and the schools actually available on the official portal. Do not use an old screenshot showing only a 1 km limit as the final rule for the entire cycle.
When reviewing a distance dispute, compare the map location with the residence proof submitted. Preserve the relevant application page and ask the help centre how a correction can be considered.
Documents and verification preparation
Consult the portal's current required-documents list. As a preparation checklist, keep:
- Child's birth certificate or the accepted age document.
- Parent or guardian identity documents required by the instructions.
- Accepted residential proof.
- Income certificate for the EWS route, where applicable.
- Category or special-status certificate where applicable.
- Application acknowledgement and allotment letter.
- The prescribed declaration or undertaking.
Families renting their home should check the exact registered-rent-agreement requirements, including any later clarification applicable to their case. A notarised document, a registered agreement and a utility bill should not be assumed to be interchangeable.
How to check selection and waiting-list status
- Open the official Maharashtra RTE portal.
- Confirm the academic year and relevant round.
- Use Application Wise Details / अर्जाची स्थिती with the application number.
- Check whether the child is selected, waiting or not selected.
- Read the specific verification and reporting instructions attached to the status.
The department advises parents to check portal status rather than depend only on an SMS. Waiting-list families should check their position and the instructions issued after the relevant selected-list deadline.
A waiting-list position is not the same as an allotment. Before travelling for admission, confirm that the child's tu has been called and identify the applicable reporting window.
What happens after selection?
Take the required originals, attested copies, allotment letter and prescribed undertaking to the designated verification committee. Follow the instructions for completing online admission confirmation and obtain its receipt.
Keep that receipt with the school's admission acknowledgement. If the school says admission has not been recorded, these documents help the education office identify where the process stopped.
Common problems and practical next steps
| Problem | What to prepare |
|---|---|
| No SMS received | Application number and a check of the official portal status. |
| Address or map position is disputed | Submitted residence proof and the relevant application details. |
| Certificate is rejected | The rejection reason, certificate and request for the applicable rule. |
| Admission confirmation is missing | Verification receipt, allotment letter and school acknowledgement. |
| Reporting deadline was missed | A written request for case review with supporting dates and documents. |
Use the help centres and education offices identified on the official portal. Keep a dated copy of any written representation.
Frequently asked questions
Can I apply just because the portal still opens?
No. A functioning website or status button does not establish an active application window. Look for a current notice authorising submissions.
Does selection complete admission?
Selection must be followed by the required verification and confirmation steps within the applicable deadline.
Can a waiting-list number be treated as a guaranteed seat?
No. Follow the official calling and reporting instructions for that list.
Does the ₹1 lakh threshold apply identically to every category?
The threshold describes the EWS route. Check the separate eligibility and evidence rules for the category claimed.
